The new Rolls-Royce Droptail is the third coachbiuilt car inthe brand’s modern era. Coachbuilt Rolls-Royce cars are the brand’s current customization projects.
The top name in the entire automotive industry is Rolls-Royce. This high-end brand typically caters to its well-heeled clientele, indulging any request with special design elements, matching features, and specific themes that allow coachbuilt cars to fit the lifestyle of the new owner. The new Droptail appeared during Monterey Car Week, where this car brought extreme levels of elegance, sophistication, and presence.
What else does this new Rolls-Royce Droptail bring as an option for the brand’s customer base?
Going from bespoke to coachbuilt
Although Rolls-Royce won’t shy away from specialized features that make its creations unique to the individual owners, coachbuilt vehicles make much more sense with a list of items that can be customized. Some Rolls owners have asked for unique items, including an embroidered falcon in the headliner and a baby’s footprint in the dash trim.
As long as customers are willing to spend the money to allow this company to create these features, they’ll do them, but the recent vehicles offered bring customization to the brand in a new way.
Which names have carried coachbuilt qualities?
The first coachbuilt model to come from the Goodwood team is the Sweptail, which appeared in 2017. This car is a two-door fastback with Wraith looks and Phantom underpinnings. After the Sweptail came the Boat Tail which showed up with a tapered body and roofless appearance. The Boat Tail has butterfly doors and high-end wood veneer in the luggage area. Now we have the Rolls-Royce Droptail, which is an open coupe made for a couple to ride down the coast. That’s all that fits in this car, two people, making it one of the most incredible coupes in the market.
The Droptail took a long time to develop
If you want to see a car that truly is the result of a labor of love, the Droptail is that car. The car’s build includes a monocoque cabin that uses steel, aluminum, and carbon fiber in the construction. The Droptail is ten inches shorter than the Ghost, and it features a body made from steel in the doors and front fenders and carbon fiber in the quarter panels and trunklid. These materials give the new Droptail the best chance of being an incredible high-end luxury car loved by the Rolls-Royce community.
Wat powers the Droptail
Although Rolls-Royce is embracing electrification and has created a more efficient powertrain, that’s not what we find in this new car. The Rolls-Royce Droptail is powered by a strong 6.7-liter V12 engine that receives more power than the standard Phantom. This new project car provides 593 horsepower and 620 lb-ft to the drive, giving owners plenty of power to send this car down the highway at top cruising speeds.
La Rose Noire
The first of four Droptail models debuted during the Monterey Car Week at The Quail. This car is named La Rose Noire, with rose petals and red paint and trim in several areas of the car. This incredible machine has mostly red and black colorings, giving it a dramatic appearance. Even the brightwork is finished in dark elements to bring consistent styling throughout the car.
The new Droptail is one of the sleekest cars ever offered, with upright items gaining an angled position. This means the grille is angled toward the windshield to make this car more aerodynamic. The lower air intake features 202 individual rectangular projects, which gives this area a three-dimensional look.
There’s a rose petal design across the dashboard, but it’s not accomplished using actual roses. Instead, 1603 pies of black sycamore wood trim veneer create the design, which appears to be rose petals scattered in the wind. This custom design captures your gaze and offers a calming feeling in the cabin area of the Rolls-Royce Droptail.
In addition to the rose petal style in the dashboard, this car features a watch that can be worn, a special champagne storage compartment, and bottles of bubbly from the clients’ vineyard. These unique elements give you an idea of what other Droptail customers could find in their new car when ordered.
How much is a Rolls-Royce Droptail?
The singular and unique nature of this new Rolls puts the price well above most other cars in the world. Although no prices were shared at the Monterey Car Week, we can guess the Droptail could cost as much as $28 million, which was the price of the Boat Tail when it was commissioned.
