Before you head to your local Ford dealer to look for a Mustang, you’ll really want to consider the pros and cons and whether this car is for you. Make no mistake, it’s a great-looking car and is fun to drive, but it won’t work for everyone. Let’s take a simple and direct look at what it’s like to own a Ford Mustang.
Reasons to Buy the Latest Mustang
First of all, there are a lot of different Mustang models to choose from. If around 300 horsepower is good enough for you, then you can save money on the lower trims. The model with the most horsepower puts out 760, but there are also plenty of options in between. A good idea is to test drive each one to see what you like and can handle.
One thing that grabbed our attention right away is how good the handling is. The Mustang feels responsive and sharp. It looks like a heavy car, but you’d never know it with how light the handling is. That makes it really great on curvy roads too. The ride is smooth and powerful, and you can easily feel that it has plenty of power in every situation.
Another reason we love the Mustang is its interior quality. The base trim upholstery is okay, but going up one trim gets you synthetic leather upholstery; even better options are available in higher trims. However, the best part is the comfortable, driver-centric cockpit. The seats have a ton of support, which is great whether we take it to the track or on a weekend road trip.
Reasons Not to Buy the Latest Mustang
When you go to your Ford dealer for a test drive, you’ll find out some of these reasons very quickly. Firstly, there’s barely a rear seat. It’s for looks or groceries only, so if you were hoping for an adult-sized rear seat, you won’t get one. The trunk, on the other hand, is quite roomy and easily swallows luggage or a couple of sets of golf clubs.
Power and handling are good reasons to buy the latest Mustang, but be aware you’ll pay for that at the gas pump, especially if you do a lot of in-town driving. It’s rated at 15 MPG in the city and 24 on the highway, and our mileage is pretty close to this.
The Mustang is a sports car, so it doesn’t offer AWD. If it’s going to be your daily driver and you get squeamish about driving in bad weather, this may be a deal-breaker since it’s a classic sports car with RWD. However, it does have traction control, so you aren’t completely stuck if you encounter some bad weather. But in general, you should consider the Mustang to be a fair-weather car.
Price-wise, the Mustang has a lot of value compared to some of its rivals. But you should know that the base Mustang is very sparse in terms of tech features. We had to move up at least one trim to get better tech and modern features.
Should You Buy?
The bottom line is that the Ford Mustang is one of the best new sports cars you can buy without paying a ton of money. It has some of the best handling and more than adequate power for its price range. It also helps that it’s an iconic car that is easily recognizable on the road. And we never have trouble finding it in a crowded parking lot.
But if you want a roomy rear seat or a car with AWD, you should probably look elsewhere.
