We’re patiently waiting for the first few Stellantis EVs to hit the market. In the meantime, a new platform has emerged called STLA Large.
The new platform will underpin upcoming electric models from the Stellantis family that are on the larger side of the vehicle market. This means the medium and large cars that we see from the brands that used to fall under FCA. Could this platform be used for the next generation of the Alfa Romeo Giulia or Stelvio? It certainly seems that way, and Stellantis has a smart plan for implementation.
Covering foreign and domestic bases
These days, it’s hard to say whether Stellantis is a domestic brand in the United States or in Europe. For decades, under the Chrysler name, we knew this automotive company was an American domestic name, but once it became FCA, that changed. Now that this company is called Stellantis, it’s hard to know. Still, the company isn’t taking any chances with new EV regulations being thrown about in all corners of the globe. The new STLA Large platform will be used in the Cassino plant in southern Italy, and it will also be on the assembly line in Windsor, Canada.
What can we expect from this new platform?
The new Stellantis Large platform is the fourth platform developed by this automotive group to give us the underpinnings for upcoming EVs. The STLA Large platform joints the Small, Medium, and Frame platforms already created. While the small, medium, and large names are easily discernable, the Frame platform might have some wondering what it’s for. The upcoming electric trucks and body-on-frame SUVs will ride on the STLA Frame platform. This platform has the build and size to support these much larger models that we’ll see added to the market soon.
Which vehicles will use the new STLA Large platform?
In addition to new Maserati and Alfa Romeo large sedans and medium-sized SUVs, this new platform could be used for some future DS models. Of course, those won’t make it to North America. However, the new Chrysler Airflow concept and electric Dodge Charger and Challenger muscle cars could utilize this platform to offer us the expected power and driving dynamics that we associate with these vehicles. We won’t know exactly which vehicles will share this platform until the time comes, but the future of Stellantis electric vehicles seems promising.
Does Stellantis have the keys to the driving range kingdom?
To date, only one electric vehicle in production surpasses 500 miles of driving range. That vehicle is the Lucid Air, and it’s an extremely expensive EV. The most recent announcement from Stellantis regarding the STLA Large platform indicated they vehicles using this build should offer up to 500 miles of driving range. If this is true, this company might hold the secrets to competitive driving ranges compared to other EVs. Hopefully, a 500-mile Challenger or Charger won’t become so expensive that most consumers can no longer afford to buy and drive them.
What vehicles are currently built at the Cassino factory?
The Cassino factory sits between Rome and Naples in Italy, and it’s home to the Alfa Romeo Giulia and Stelvio. This is also where the new Maserati Grecale is built. Adding the STLA Large platform to this factory makes perfect sense for this brand. All three of these vehicles will use this platform, and it offers Stellantis an opportunity to expand the electric vehicle offerings with more models that could share the same underpinnings at the Cassino factory.
How much is Stellantis investing in this new platform?
The new Stellantis STLA Large platform will cost nearly 30 billion euros for the transition to full electrification between now and 2025. These vehicles are not only being made to be full EVs, but they also bring massive amounts of new software to the mix. We’re unsure what vehicles, other than the models mentioned, will be made at the Windsor factory using this platform, but it wouldn’t be surprising to see an electric Durango, a few EV Jeeps, or the new Pacifica utilizing the STLA Large platform in the near future.
Stellantis adds one more EV-centric platform to the mix to make four. We’re still waiting for the new EVs from this automotive company to arrive, but the future looks strong, especially if Stellantis can truly offer up to 500 miles of driving range. Only time will tell what this company will deliver to the market.
