McLaren is well-known for some of the most powerful and exciting supercars in the market. Does the McLaren Artura keep with this tradition?
The Artura is the next generation of the hybrid supercar. Many performance brands have embraced electrification in their performance machines, but this car takes us in a new direction. The Artura uses an all-new platform with a new twin-turbocharged V6 engine and the first electronic differential in a McLaren sports car.
Let’s dig in and see if this car is good enough to compete with the Lamborghini Huracan Evo, Maserati MC20, Ferrari F8 Tributo, and Ferrari 296 GTB.
The Artura uses a New Ultra-Light Platform
The all-new platform used for this car is called McLaren Carbon Lightweight Architecture (MCLA), and it’s designed specifically for hybrid performance cars. There are four different kinds of carbon fiber included in the new core material to bring the strength and stiffness necessary to give this performance machine an excellent drive. The monocoque weighs 181 pounds, which is extremely light. This car has 287 pounds of hybrid hardware, but the entire car weighs 3,303 pounds compared to the Maserati MC20 at 3,757 pounds. The Lamborghini Huracan Evo is lighter at 3,062 pounds.
As Expected, this Car is Extremely Agile
The lightweight MCLA platform and highly-responsive electro-hydraulic steering system allow the McLaren Artura to be a lot of fun to drive on any track. This car also has a low center of gravity and a new electronic limited-slip differential, which allows this car to stick to the track and corner at high speeds. Compared to the Huracan Evo, the Artura is a much better car on the track.
The Pricing Isn’t Too High; Comparatively
The starting price of this McLaren is $237,500. That sounds like a lot, but it falls right in the middle of this supercar class. The Maserati MC20 starts at $216,985, and the Huracan EV begins at $213,104. On the other side of the pricing structure, the Ferrari F8 Tributo comes in at $283,950, while the Ferrari 296 GTB, which has the same top speed and acceleration as the Artura, starts at $322,986. As you can see, the Artura is priced right for its class.
The Artura has Four Drive Modes
Every journey in this impressive supercar can be as fun as possible with the four well-configured driving modes. The electric mode gives you a top speed of 81 mph and 11 miles of driving range, but it could be good when you’re in traffic. The comfort model gives you the softness you want during a country cruise. The other two modes are sport and track, which unleash the fury of the McLaren Artura. Other models also have several modes for driving, which doesn’t give this car or any of the others an advantage.
You Want Speed? This McLaren has Speed
How fast do you want to go? If you want to hit 60 mph in three seconds or less, the Artura has you covered. Are you facing a quarter-mile sprint? No problem, this McLaren can make that run disappear in 10.7 seconds on the way to the top speed of 205 mph. These speeds are on par with the Ferrari 296 GTB, which costs a lot more than the Artura. The only competitor that we list with a faster sprint time than the Artura is the F8 Tributo which can hit 60 mph in 2.8 seconds.
McLaren Offers a Better Warranty
Warranties for supercars seem odd. These cars are made to be pushed hard on a track, which means companies need to cover this type of driving. The McLaren Artura has a three-year service plan, five years of roadside assistance, ten years of anti-perforation coverage, and a powertrain warranty that covers the car for six years. The limited bumper-to-bumper warranty is five years. These warranties beat the Huracan Evo and F8 Tributo, but the F8 does have seven years of complimentary maintenance.
You Can Drive the Artura Everyday
Most people won’t drive a supercar every day but isn’t it nice when an automaker thinks you might want to? The Artura has excellent rear visibility, which is something other models lack. This car also has driver-assist features and comfort items that beat the competition. Take this car out on public roads to show it off, and you’ll enjoy the benefits of intelligent adaptive cruise control, road sign recognition, lane departure warning, hill hold assist, and stability control with three modes. There’s even a Bowers & Wilkins 12-speaker audio system to bring the wonderful sounds you love into the cabin.
McLaren Bakes in Better Fuel Economy Than Expected
The V6 PHEV powertrain of the McLaren Artura returns a fuel mileage rating that you might never expect to find in a supercar. This performance machine reaches 17 city/21 hwy mpg, which is extremely impressive. If you factor in the electric driving range, you reach 39 MPGe in this hypercar. The only car to beat the Artura is the Maserati MC20 with 15 city/25 hwy mpg. Other models try and come close, but none achieve the same fuel economy as the Artura.
Function is Prioritized in the Artura
The steering wheel doesn’t have any buttons, the cabin is minimalistic, and the interior adopts a sophisticated approach with a sleek, well-trimmed look. All controls for this car are located within easy reach of the driver, giving you an easy way to handle every ride from behind the wheel of this supercar. Other models in our comparison have similar minimalistic bends, although the F8 does lean more toward the sporty-designed interior than most.
Brilliant Hybrid Powertrain
The McLaren Artura has a blistering hybrid powertrain to make it one of the most formidable supercars in its class. This powertrain brings a new 3.0-liter twin-turbocharged V6 engine and an electric hybrid motor to deliver 671 horsepower and 531 lb-ft of torque. The e-motor has a 7.4-kWh battery pack to offer a short all-electric driving range. The batteries can be charged at electric charging stations, but can also be charged by the V6 engine while driving.
Comparatively, the Huracan Evo offers 602 horsepower, the MC20 has 621 ponies, and the F8 Tributo pumps out 711 horsepower. The most powerful car of the five we’ve compared is the 296 GTB at 818 horsepower, but that doesn’t translate to better speed; the McLaren Artura matches it in the sprint times.
