The Mercedes AMG One just made massive headlines and proves that maybe it is the best street-legal production car ever made.
On October 28, 2022, the Mercedes AMG one broke the record for the fastest lap at the Nurburgring Production-car race track. At a stunning six minutes and 35.183 seconds, the AMG One dashed the former record holder by eight whole seconds. This rates the German hypercar as the fastest street-legal production car in all of existence. The AMG One is not just one of a kind, it is now the one and only, and its record is going to be a hard one to beat.
With the fastest lap in Nurburgring history, the Mercedes AMG One has proved it is nothing shy of absolute majesty. It took a lot of hard work, inspiration, and revision to get the car to be this good.
Trial and Error
The Mercedes AMG One, fitted with a championship-winning F1 hybrid engine, completed the Nurburgring circuit in six minutes and 35.183 seconds. While this is extremely impressive, it took more than a bit of luck to achieve this.
The AMG One beat the previous record by eight seconds. The previous record holder was the Porsche 911 GT2 RS, which, at the time, was using a factory-approved Manthey Performance Kit. The Porsche 911 GT2 RS finished the circuit in six minutes and 43.30 seconds in 2021. At the time, no one knew the record would be transferred to Mercedes in just one year’s time.
Before the AMG One stole the record, Mercedes’ best time on the circuit was with the Mercedes AMG – twin-turbo V8-engine GT Black Series coupe. This supercar finished the circuit in six minutes and 48.04 seconds in 2020. It was a good time, but Mercedes knew they could do better.
Finally, in late 2022, Maro Engel set the new lap record at the Nurburgring circuit. This AMG One is a standard production edition. It is powered by a 1.6-liter turbocharged V6 hybrid engine. While this car is a certified beast on the track, it is still legal to drive it around. Inspired by actual Formula 1 race cars, the AMG One uses an engine that is both fuel-powered and electric. How does that work? Well, the engine itself uses petrol and there are 4 electric motors to enhance the turbocharger, one for each wheel. In terms of engineering, this car is an absolute work of art.
It took multiple versions of the AMG One to get to the one we currently have. Not only that but it took many tries for the driver, Maro Engel, to set the new record. According to Mercedes, the record was set on the last lap of the day. But this is not Mercedes’ last-ditch effort. It is in fact the beginning of a new age.
While you will not be able to find these majestic hypercars at your local Mercedes dealer, you can ask your dealership about these awesome cars. Plus, if you are looking for a sweet Mercedes for yourself, you’ll be in good hands.
