Performance isn’t always defined as being able to drive fast or carve up the corners on a track. When you’re looking for great performance from a fuel-efficient model it means you want to be able to enjoy numbers that give you more miles to the gallon of gas or a longer range from an EV model. Mazda has found a way to bring more performance out of its engines to bring us the most fuel mileage while also delivering the full torque level at lower rpm than you could ever find in the models offered from other brands.
The engine technology Mazda uses has been called SkyActiv technology and it makes use of compression ratios that aren’t usually found in engines that are small and active. With stricter regulations on the horizon, it makes sense to think that you would need to have more performance from the models you choose to drive so that you can experience greater levels of fuel mileage on the road. The Mazda team has improved its SkyActiv technology to bring us the new SkyActiv-X technology to ensure we can have the ride desired while making use of a system that’s much different from what we currently see on the market.
Incorporating Technologies
The foundation for the technology being offered is the supercharged compression ignition gas engine which has the ability to continually switch from spark ignition to compression ignition in the engine. This allows you to have the benefits of the clean emissions of a gasoline engine but the fuel economy of a diesel model when driving down the road in a new Mazda that has the new SkyActiv-X technology under the hood. This is the result of using the way a diesel engine burns fuel and the way a typical engine sparks it for the combustion needed.
The compression ignition is able to happen mostly at low rpm where the demand for quick acceleration isn’t required. The fuel mixture during this time is lean to enable the engine to perform efficiently. If a more aggressive acceleration is needed the spark ignition can take over seamlessly. This technological development has made it possible for the Mazda brand to avoid using external technology for the performance desired from the engine under the hood of the Mazda you want to drive. You’ll enjoy the drive in a car with this engine because it doesn’t cause you to have the feeling of driving a vehicle powered by an engine that feels artificial.
So far, the new SkyActiv-X technology offered is allowing the Mazda team to exceed the performance expectations for the vehicles that will be powered by this new engine. This new technology is not only allowing Mazda to reach the fuel mileage numbers desired, but they are also able to push the limits of performance which Mazda hasn’t seen in the engines it offered in the past. This new engine is expected to arrive under the hood of the Mazda3 in the future in order to give us the drive and the fun we want on the road with the efficiency we’ve been looking for.
