Let the Car do the Driving

Cadillac Super Cruise: Let the car do the driving.

Get in and begin the drive in the new Cadillac CT6 and head out on the expressways in your area. When you do this, you’ll notice a system that can be activated that shows you a variety of green lights that let you know the car is ready to drive on its own. This new system can allow you to let this car do the driving and make your drive boring, but more relaxing than what you currently enjoy on some vehicles that require a different type of driving.

This new system is the Cadillac Super Cruise and it’s meant to allow you to drive for many miles on the expressway without ever touching the steering wheel. The Cadillac team has partnered with GeoDigital, which is a startup in the GM Venture area which has mapped out 160,000 miles of expressway in the US and Canada to make sure the programming installed in the CT6 is ready to give you the information you want to have when you’re driving, or allowing the car to do the driving, on these roads. This is a system that’s meant to help put this brand into the realm of semi-autonomous driving and could one day even become a possibility for other favorites, like the Cadillac XTS.

Super Cruise and Tesla Autopilot

Does the Cadillac Super Cruise compare with the Tesla Autopilot system? It does in some ways, but the Tesla system uses real-time data to operate on most roads. The Super Cruise for Cadillac is currently limited to the expressways in the US and Canada, but it will eventually be expanded. The faith some drivers had in the Tesla system in the past have taught all automakers to hold back and be more careful when it comes to the systems that are offered in the vehicles that have any form of self-driving installed.
The Cadillac Super Cruise has three different lights that will show up green to let you know the system is ready to take over and a couple of other lights that you’ll see for other reasons as well. The light across the steering wheel can turn blue, which indicates the driver has taken over controls of the system for a short period of time or it can show a red light which indicates a need for the driver to confirm they are paying attention to the road and not watching a movie, reading a book or checking different social media on their smartphones.

An Intelligent Tracking System

While not nearly as advanced as the Autopilot system from Tesla, the new Cadillac Super Cruise is a system in development that will continue to allow you to enjoy a drive and improve toward full autonomy over the next several years. This system tracks you as the drive and the roads to make sure you can have a drive that’s easy to enjoy and ensures you’re paying attention to the road at least every seven to twenty seconds. There are alerts to make sure you take a look at the road and if you don’t respond to the alerts eventually the car will pull over and turn off to help keep you safe.
